What is Insurance Fraud?

In the simplest terms, insurance fraud is the act of deceiving or misrepresenting material information for the purposes of profiting from the benefits of an insurance policy. Acts of insurance fraud may range from submitting inflated estimates of damages on a legitimate loss to committing arson for the purposes of collecting insurance proceeds. Other examples of insurance fraud include staged accidents, submitting claims for items that were not damaged in a loss, and withholding material information when applying for an insurance policy or when submitting a claim.

Who are the Victims of Insurance Fraud?

All honest policyholders are the victims of this crime. Although the actual annual cost of insurance fraud is not known, estimates suggest that it is the second largest economic crime in the United States, exceeded only by tax evasion. Unfortunately, this cost is passed on to the general public in the form of increased insurance premiums.
